Teaching
Teaching Philosophy:
I believe that music is a language all its own and
is a truly unique means of human expression.
There are certain life moments, emotions,
and ideas that can only be fully expressed through music.
It is a part of every individual in that it has the power to speak to us,
often at very deep and personal levels.
In keeping with these ideas, my objective
as a teacher is to facilitate an understanding
and experience of music with my students
both in basic fundamentals and creative expression,
provide them with the tools necessary
for developing their instruments
and artistry over the course a lifetime,
and to foster that growth through high expectation
and sustained support.
I believe that there is no greater privilege
and honor than teaching a student to love music
and walk with them on their journey
to realizing their full potential as singers
and, ultimately, artists.
How rewarding it is to see a student begin discover
who they are and the ways in which they can share themselves
with others through their singing.
I believe that in teaching, the teacher must
always remember that each student is an individual
and as such they require specific instruction
tailored to their specific needs.
That means as a teacher, I must constantly search for new
and creative ways to express certain bedrock principles
of vocal technique as well as be aware
of new scientific findings and
teaching trends that may aid in this goal.
I recall with much gratitude and appreciation,
the teachers who mentored me in this wonderful art.
They were always challenging me
to be more than I thought I could be.
They were always supporting me as I grew as a singer.
They were my mentors, my guides, my teachers.
I endeavor to be that kind of teacher to my students.Â
